Diving back into the dirt.

We made it back to the Stronghold at the beginning of June. We are eager to be growing food, raising livestock and building our future.

One of our first tasks is to get amendments for the garden soil. We drove to Tucson and picked up 300 lbs of worm castings from Inch by Inch in Tucson. We also picked up worms for ourselves.

We then loaded up 6 yards of organic compost from Tanks Green Stuff in Tucson.

Compost teas: to create our compost teas we use a large fish tank bubbler in a 55 gallon container. We use mesh bags to contain chicken poop and another to contain wood chips with local mycelium.  By oxygenating the water we are growing the beneficial microbes to feed our soil.  We used a sump pump to pump the compost tea to our plants. this batch was for our fruit trees.  We wrapped the sump pump in two of the smaller mesh bags to keep any debris from damaging the motor.

Soil for transplants: My tomatoes and cucumbers were ready to be repotted. Baby pools are perfect soil mixing containers!

Worm Bins:
We are using the Can O’ Worms bin. The bottom tray has gone missing and we are substituting a 55 gallon bucket lid for now. To prepare the worm bed I shredded up an old carboard box. I blended our last weeks worth of compost in an old Ninja blender that is great at chopping but just doesn’t blend fine enough for my green smoothies.
